This course is about the role of effective advocacy in preparing and writing trial and appellate briefs and related documents. It is designed for practicing attorneys, law students, paralegals and other legal writers to assist in developing and refining legal writing skills and in constructing persuasive legal arguments. In this course the student will learn to make points clearly, precisely and eloquently while concentrating on the legal writer’s all important role as an advocate. The course focus will be on the role of advocacy as it plays out in the process of constructing and writing trial and appellate briefs. Each step in this at times arduous and time consuming process will be closely examined in light of the overall goal of becoming an effective advocate. Through readings, discussion and written exercises, the course will refresh and expand core writing skills while at the same time developing the writer’s ability to tell the story of a case, to construct compelling and  persuasive arguments and to improve basic legal writing skills.
