Larry Knapp

Dr. Lawrence Knapp is a man of his times.

He has transitioned a career from traditional college classroom instruction to an online setting, which gives him and his students the flexibility they need.

“Mentoring at Thomas Edison State College is a very unique experience,” said Knapp, a mentor at the College since 1996. “There is an incredible variety of adults from all walks of life, yet they all share a very real commitment to completing their education.”

Knapp mentors English Composition, Technical Writing, Advanced American Literature, Analysis and Interpretation of Literature, and Children’s Literature. He also serves on the College’s Academic Council, and assists in the development of course-related materials.

The flexibility of online learning has Knapp so enamored that he rarely finds himself in a traditional classroom setting.

“Teaching online opens up many possibilities in terms of lifestyle,” said Knapp. “I quickly learned that I could be fishing on any number of beaches or boats in the morning and teaching online from a business center or kiosk by that afternoon.”

Knapp is a graduate of Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., and Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J. Since 1969, Knapp has served as chair of the English Department at Essex County College, and more recently, as an associate dean of liberal arts and chair of the humanities division. He has also taught online for the University of Phoenix.

Knapp resides in Fairfield Harbour, N.C., with his wife Betty, a retired art therapist.
